Competition winners Calcot Hawks are presented with a grand cheque, with representatives U16 manager Tim Holloway (on left) and Chairman Wayne Sangwell (on right)

18th March brought a rousing victory for Calcot Hawks Football Club when they became the winners of HugoFox.com’s sports sponsorship competition, powering ahead of 22  other teams to win a grand total of £1300.

Kicked off by HugoFox.com in February, the competition  involved 23 local sports teams who had already received equal sponsorship from HugoFox.com, pitting them against one another in a race to take home an additional £1000 jackpot. The teams gained points by encouraging people to post on the local listings site, with users able to select which team to support when they made their post.

After an impressive effort from all of the clubs, Calcot Hawks FC  emerged victorious on the closing date of 18th March, having racked up a mighty final total of 15,095 points. The other teams do not go away empty-handed, however, as each team’s collected points are translated into a proportionate amount of sponsorship money. Many of the clubs have thus earned themselves a substantial cash bonus, but throughout the competition three teams really stood out, including Andover Hockey Club and the Rustington Otters. Nevertheless, Calcot Hawks FC dominated play from the get-go, refusing to surrender its lead. Due to the efforts of its members and supporters, the club comes away with a fantastic total of £1301.90 Now that’s teamwork!

It was a very pleasant surprise to find out we had won the competition, club founder and coach Wayne Sangwell tells HugoFox News. “We have five teams within Calcot Hawks FC and I think everyone played their part. We all asked everyone we knew to register and post on HugoFox.com – from Glasgow to Dover, relatives, friends and business contacts were all asked.

As Wayne comments, £1301.90 is a lot of money to a small grass-roots club. He tells HugoFox News that the Hawks already have great plans for how to put the extra sponsorship to use. “What will we do with it? The Under 16′s team, who will be going into Adults football next season, will need new kits and tracksuits, so this will probably be the main priority. The remaining money will be put towards the cost of our coaching courses. We are a Charter Standard club and all coaches must be of at least FA Level 1 and hold a first aid certificate. The extra money will help us to continue to be Charter Standard and allow us to better our coaching at Calcot Hawks.

Wayne started Calcot Hawks FC in June 2002, at which time the club consisted of five boys who made up the sole team. The Hawks have come a long way since then. Instead of five boys, the club now has five complete teams – and with players not only from Calcot itself, but also from Reading, Tilehurst, Whitley, and the surrounding areas, Calcot Hawks has grown into a thriving club that continues to go from strength to strength.

But for local sports clubs, Wayne remarks, sponsorship is often difficult to find. “HugoFox really does need to be thanked so much,” he says, “as in the current economic climate it is so hard for small clubs to get any money from sponsorship. For HugoFox.com to run a competition of this sort really shows that they are committed to the local community.

The teams at Calcot Hawks are currently training hard for next season. HugoFox.com wishes them the very best of luck – and the joy of their well-earned sponsorship!

Andover Hockey’s ladies and boys made sponsors HugoFox.com very proud, when they put in two fantastic performances last weekend.

Andover Ladies 1st team rein triumphant after last weekend's match against Basingstoke

Andover Ladies 1st team continued their good run of form with an impressive victory over local rivals Basingstoke, with a final score 6 – 3. This was a must-win game for the ladies as they maintained their pressure on the league leaders Yateley who they come up against next week.

Andover started brightly but could not get a decent effort on target until an excellent run and persistence from Eleri Watson ended with Jacqui West opening the scoring with a simple tap in. Anika Drage had a fine effort saved by the keeper from a short corner and Hannah Cowley also went close with a stinging shot, before West doubled the lead midway through the first half after latching onto a superb ball from Reah Li and then completed her hat-trick in similar fashion after an initial shot from Anika Drage. The best goal of the game came just before half time: a fine flowing move involving several players ended with Ellie Ingram cooley rounding the keeper to make it four.

The ladies knew they could not be complacent as Basingstoke had shown some attacking promise in the first half, but they started sloppy and conceded and early goal before West restored their four goal cushion with her fourth and Andover’s fifth after good work from Ellie Ingram. Andover were continually getting caught with the long ball out of defence as Basingstoke broke away and scored another, but the see-saw second half continued as a well worked short corner between Anika Drage and Karen Winnett resulted in Drage calmly slotting home Andover sixth. Basingstoke completed the scoring with their third but this was Andover’s day and they remain in second place.

The Ladies travel to Yateley next week for their penultimate game knowing that a victory will put pressure on their opposition, who are five points ahead, for the final game of the season.

Bearing their new HugoFox.com strip, Andover's U14's team beat Farnham U14s 8 - 5

The Club’s U14 boys also put in an impressive performance, playing their first game sporting their new HugoFox.com shirts and winning the match against Farnham U14s.

Looking the part, they began well but found themselves 2 – 0 down to Aldershot & Farnham after 5 minutes. Some adjustments in midfield saw Andover begin to take more control and they got just reward for some good passing play when they got one goal back and soon drew level. It was the opposition who regained the lead and increased it when some sloppy defending left the keeper no chance. Andover fought back to make it 4-4 at half time.

Liam O’Sullivan began to command the game and scored some impressive goals to give Andover a lead before Aldershot & Farnham got one back. However, Andover had the game won and were able to seal a fine win when goal number 8 went in. The final score was 8-5. Thanks to Sam Goacher for umpiring and to all the parents for their support.

Andover Hockey Club also wishes to thank HugoFox.com for the company’s sponsorship, and from all the team, we wish to return the gratitude – for displaying such brilliant skills whilst bearing our logo and making the Fox proud!

Since first launching in 2010, the team behind local listings website HugoFox.com has worked hard to stay true to their mission of helping locals to ‘keep it local’, by supporting a number of charitable schemes and local initiatives in communities across the South, as well as sponsoring 24 youth and adult sports teams.

And it’s the company’s involvement with the latter that’s got clubs and their teams talking of late, with the website launching a competition for one of them to win £1000. Last week, founder Michael Thompson visited clubs across the South, encouraging them to sign up and list on the website to earn their club points for every post. The website features categories for cars, jobs, classifieds, events, charitiesbusinesses and offers – and with many of these free to post, it really is a win-win opportunity for sports teams looking to earn some much needed funding.

Michael tells HugoFox News: “It really is a case of ‘sports for all’ at HugoFox.com, as we are keen to help our local teams to raise funds and encourage more support from their surrounding areas. We are focused on getting people online and networking within their communities, as our website strives to help people source whatever they need, right on

their doorstep – and since launching the site, we have seen its popularity increase as a way for businesses to list their services for free and employers to recruit within their local area. The current competition between our sponsored teams will not only give them the chance to earn some serious cash; it will also

encourage people to see just what events, services and goods are available within their village or town.”

HugoFox.com team member Victoria Poolman adds: “This really is an exciting opportunity for all our sponsored clubs – not only do they stand a chance of winning £1000, but every individual who posts on the site is automatically entered into a monthly draw to win an iPad2. What’s more, every team will see their points converted to cash which they can use to support their club, buy new kit and equipment – however they see fit. Lots of our teams are really racking their points up now and we can’t wait to see who comes first, and how they’ll benefit from their winnings!”

Andover Hockey Men's 3rd Team back the Fox

With the closing date of 18th March drawing near, teams are working hard to encourage their friends, affiliates, business links and families to use the site – registering with their club of choice to earn them points for every post. Many have posted appeals on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, some have involved their work colleagues and employers (with job vacancies netting a club a whopping 270 points per post) and the word is spreading far and wide. With all the clubs supporting the initiative and backing HugoFox.com, the race is on to net some serious funding… the question is, who’ll be first past the finish line…

They might be the shortest, they’re certainly the youngest, but Andover Hockey Club’s Under- 8s are already proving that they’re a force to be reckoned with. And with former adult club members representing Great Britain in competition, it just goes to show that from small acorns, grow great oaks.

Andover Hockey Under 8s

Today’s players are currently flying high after an impressive show at the Mini’s Festival in Romsey. Two Andover teams competed in a tournament against Winchester, Bournemouthand and Southampton amongst others. Playing ten games between them, the two Andover sides won eight, drew one and lost one match.

It’s testament to a thriving youth section that’s nurtured by club leaders and it goes to show that a sporting legacy is alive and well in Andover. The original men’s hockey club was founded in 1895 and since then, play has only been halted for the two World Wars when members were forced to put their country ahead of hockey. Now they ‘fight them on the’ all-weather pitch at Charlton Leisure Centre; their official grounds since 1985.

There’s been recent success too for Andover Ladies first team. They go into the second half of the season brimming with confidence and looking to maintain their unbeaten run, as they look to challenge Yateley for the top spot in the Hampshire League.

The men’s first and XI are in the Hants/Surrey Regional Leagues with the Men’s third XI in the Hants Open League. There’s even a veterans’ team representing Andover in theWessex Masters League.

Now there’s an added boost to the Andover teams – having just signed a three-year sponsorship deal with HugoFox.com, the Club can only go from strength to strength. With an active social calendar and a real sense of ‘family’ within the club, they were obvious beneficiaries for HugoFox.com sponsorship. It’s not all ‘jolly hockey sticks’ but it will be a merry Christmas and here’s hoping a winning new year for all at Andover.
