Dyslexia Research Trust

Ready, set, GO! Runners get off to a good start for the second of the day’s sponsored fun runs

A Fun Day was had by all at the DRT’s recent event, which took place on Saturday 19th May and involved two sponsored fun runs taking place around the beautiful Oxford University Parks.

With dozens of fabulous stalls set up, selling books, wedding favours, toy stalls full of weird and wonderful amusements amongst other goodies, there was plenty of entertainment – including a bouncy castle, face painting and lucky dip for the children.

Adults weren’t left out, with the afternoon’s raffle prizes including a Champagne dinner for two courtesy of The Randolf Hotel, spa memberships from David Lloyd gyms, paintball experiences and even ‘Deal or No Deal’ tickets, donated by Endemol UK plc.

Professor John Stein, co-founder of the DRT, and his brother, celebrity chef Rick Stein.

The Family Fun Day was set up and ready to go at 10am, with nearly one hundred runners gathering to race in the two fun runs arranged and zumba-style warm ups courtesy of Georgina from the Amanda Alder Dance Academy.

We were delighted to see so many taking part, with runners of all ages and abilities donning their tracksuits to raise money for the Dyslexia Research Trust – clearly a cause that is close to the hearts of so many.

A castle fit for a (very small) king!

Those competing were rewarded by a number of enticing foodie stalls, including a barbecue, Sasi Thai Cuisine stall, as well as chefs from Padstow’s famous Seafood Restaurant cooking up a storm with their Fish Taco Bar.

Celebrity guest of the day was Rick Stein, brother of the charity’s founder, Professor John Stein. Any sibling rivalry from the past was awakened when the two went head to head for the second race of the day, but all was in the name of a good cause, with total funds raised by those involved amounting to an incredible £3500.

Rick Stein swaps his wooden spoon for a baton to conduct the Abingdon Brass Band

Professor John Stein commented: “Thanks to all the loyal and generous supporters of the DRT, the Fun Run Day was a tremendous success.  Nearly one hundred runners, including Rick Stein, nearly thirty stalls and other attractions, including Sasi Phasori’s delicious Thai dishes, Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant fish taco bar; Catermaster’s Barbecue, The Cellar beer tent and lots and lots of children’s activities made for a thoroughly enjoyable family day – all in the aid of a hugely important cause, helping children to learn to read.”

Congratulations to all runners who took part in the fun runs – especially this little one, whose one mile effort must have felt like the London Marathon!

Rick Stein tweeted: ‘What a magical day.  All the colourful stalls; all the excited children. A wonderful occasion for all - in aid of such a worthwhile cause, the Dyslexia Research Trust’.

The HugoFox News team wishes to congratulate John, Clarice and everyone who made the day such a joy to attend, and a hugely successful fundraiser for supporting the important work which goes on at the DRT.

As catering manager of the Rogers family, Sandra’s dinner-time menu left a little to be desired…

Where would we be without our Mums? Unable to eat, dress, conduct ourselves socially and with nobody to wipe our faces after dinner.

In fact, if you were to search on our Jobs section for a Mum, you’d probably need to include quite a few keywords: caterer, housekeeper, dry cleaning services, head of entertainment, nurse, taxi-driver, counsellor, teacher, relationship therapist, accountant, personal shopper, estate manager, travel agent, animal trainer… the list goes on. Which is precisely why Mums are so great at multi-tasking (thank goodness!).

With several mums amongst the HugoFox team, we know exactly how important it is to handle your time effectively. If you are not juggling saucepans, separating whites from colours and changing nappies all at once now, you’re probably planning how to manage the growing list for tomorrow. Makes you tired just reading about it all, doesn’t it? Luckily for Mums throughout the region, HugoFox is here to help.

Here on HugoFox.com we have tried to keep this in mind as we constantly update our news, events, jobs and offers to keep your life ticking along consistently: after all, having a ‘one stop’ site where you can organise most of your ‘duties’ in one hit is a time-saving luxury. With constant updates on our many sections, we can help you find a local football club, book a birthday party, search for some great local shopping deals and much more – even better, everything is local to you, saving time, money and a whole lot of additional effort!

Whether you need a new car for your growing family (Hummer, anyone?) a part-time job to fit around your family needs or you are looking for ideas to help the finances go further, there is a category to fit the bill. HugoFox.com has great ideas for keeping the family happy on a weekend or school holiday with events from fun days to family musicals  - and if you are on a budget, it’s always worth a browse through the Offers section for discounts and savings on your doorstep.

Being a mum is the best feeling in the world… but sometimes we all need a little time-saver to help make the job a bit easier. Search HugoFox.com for ideas.

The business section has listings of the services you may need for organising a holiday, coffee shops and beauticians to unwind, to specialist food retailers if you are trying to work around your vegetarian/intolerant/generally picky brood. Need a regular babysitter or a nanny? Why not post under our Jobs section (posting costs from just £24) where local, well-known and reliable people will be looking for this type of work – after all, as events manager and head of recruitment, this is part of your role too!

School is a big part of family life so being able to read about what the local schools are up to can give an insight into the activities in which they encourage their pupils to participate. Our News site is well worth keeping tabs on – not least because we avoid the sensationalist and just generally depressing stories in favour of what’s really relevant to you – read about the Dyslexia Research Trust here to find out how this charity changes children’s lives, and of all the great charity work which is being done to help raise funds for such worthwhile causes.

And if, after all that, you still have a spare few minutes each day to run a business of your own, then the site is a fantastic way to list and promote your services: there are guides to help you use HugoFox to your advantage and develop your business, whilst still reserving precious time to wipe little Johnny’s nose and release the cat’s tail from Molly’s ‘death grip’. All in a day’s work…

Keep up to date by following us on Twitter or checking the Facebook page, where you can have your say, make suggestions and leave comments. The team are always glad to hear any thoughts and ideas, so do get in touch by emailing us at news@hugofox.com.

There’s now more incentive than ever to sign up for the Dyslexia Research Trust’s Fun Runs, taking place on Saturday 19th May as part of the charity’s fundraising Family Fun Day at the Oxford University Parks. The first 400 people to register for one of the two fun runs will receive a free family day pass from the David Lloyd Oxford Gym, worth a whopping £45!

Entry for is £5 per race, and you can choose to complete the 1 mile or 5km course, taking place at 11am and 12am respectively – or, if you’re the energetic type, both of them!

Just an example of some of the gorgeous facilities on offer from the David Lloyd chain of fitness centres. Don’t you just want to dive in?

There’s no need to be Speedy Gonzales to take part. You can complete the Fun Run at your own pace: running, jogging, walking… even crawling if you want to! Whatever your speed, you can finish the course with pride, in the knowledge that your participation has helped to support the DRT’s worthy cause. A charity dedicated to researching, diagnosing, and understanding dyslexia and related conditions, the Trust helps to improve the lives of people with learning difficulties, helping them to build their confidence and reach their full potential.

And even if you’re not keen on running, it will be well worth heading over to the Oxford University Parks (OX1 3RF) next Saturday. The DRT’s Family Fun Day will be open from 10am-4pm, with entry free of charge. With stalls, music, children’s face painting, and more, the Fun Day will provide fun, food, and frivolity whilst raising vital funds for the Trust’s work. Find out more about the Dyslexia Research Trust and their Fun Day over at their website, or visit last week’s article on HugoFox News.

Well, what are you waiting for – those 400 gym passes aren’t going to wait around! Dash over to the DRT’s website to get your hands on one. On your marks… Get Set… Go!

On your marks… Get set… Go! Race over to the DRT’s website to sign up for their Fun Run on 19th May!

There’s still time to nab a place on one (or both!) of the Dyslexia Research Trust’s Fun Runs, to be held as part of their Family Fun Day on Saturday 19th May. Taking place in the beautiful Oxford University Parks (OX1 3RF), there is a choice between a 1 mile or 5km course, starting at 11am and 12am respectively. It doesn’t matter if you race like a hare or plod like a tortoise – by taking part (at whichever speed!) you’ll help to raise crucial funds for the DRT’s life-changing work.

Signing up for the Fun Runs is a doddle: just complete the registration form over at the Trust’s website. Alternatively, contact Clarice Davies on clarice.davies@dpag.ox.ac.uk or 01865 282552 to secure your position at the starting line. Registration in advance is strongly recommended, but if you don’t manage to sign up beforehand, places will still be available on the day from 9.45am at the registration tent. The entry fee is £5 per race. Fancy dress is optional, but there will be a prize for the best costume on the day so it’s worth putting some thought into that outfit if you want to be in with a chance of winning!

If fancy dress wasn’t incentive enough, the DRT’s Fun Runners will be joined by some exciting participants – not least celebrity chef and DRT patron Rick Stein, who will be swapping his checked apron for his running shoes next Saturday. Television presenter, OBE, and author of 16 best-selling cookery books, Mr. Stein will be finishing a different kind of ‘course’ than usual as he takes part in the DRT’s 1 mile race! And that’s not all: the DRT will also be welcoming the six runners who represented the Trust at the London Marathon last month.

The money raised by the Fun Runs and Family Fun Day will be a huge help to the DRT, a charity that provides much-needed support for people with dyslexia. Using specialist clinics, a dyslexia diagnosis service, and ongoing research into dyslexia and related conditions, the DRT aims to improve the lives of young people with learning difficulties, helping them to regain their confidence and reach their full potential. HugoFox.com’s founder, Michael Thompson, experienced first-hand the DRT’s incredible work when, due to the Trust conducting tests at their primary school, his two sons were diagnosed with serious eye conditions. If not for the DRT, the conditions would have been caught too late and would not have been treatable. As such, HugoFox.com is committed to helping support the work of the Trust. We’re certain that the Family Fun Day and Fun Run will be a great success – but the more people who take part, the better!

There’s no need to feel left out if you’re not the running type. The DRT’s Family Fun Day will be packed with attractions to entertain you besides the races. Indeed, even a quick scan of the list below will give you a taste of the many stalls, entertainments, and activities that will be on offer. If these don’t tempt you down to the Oxford University Parks from 10am-4pm on Saturday 19th, we don’t know what will!

After your run, make sure you treat yourself to a delicious pancake from ‘Crepes ‘O’ Mania – a well-deserved reward, we say!

Celebrity Chef Rick Stein will be amongst those joining a Fun Run to raise funds for the Dyslexia Research Trust (DRT)  at Oxford University Parks on Saturday 19th May.

DRT Patron Rick Stein OBE with his brother and founder of the DRT, Professor John Stein

The Trust will be holding a Family Fun Day and two Fun Runs, with refreshments, music and activities for all the family, to help generate vital funds for the DRT’s research and clinics.

Rick Stein OBE, television presenter and author of 16 best-selling cookery books, is a patron of the DRT and will be joining other runners on the 5km and 1 mile course, held at 11am and 12am respectively, as they raise money to help provide children with vital support and continue the life-changing research conducted by the charity.

With places limited, those wishing to enter are encouraged to register online by visiting www.dyslexic.org.uk, or contact Clarice Davies on clarice.davies@dpag.ox.ac.uk or 01865 282552 to secure their position behind the starting line. The entry fee is £5 per race and both runs are open to all to walk, jog or run for the charity. Fancy dress is optional – although those who don’t fancy their chances at breaking a land speed record might want to put thought into their outfit, as there will be a prize for the best costume on the day.

The DRT will also be delighted to welcome their six London Marathon runners to run who will be representing the Trust at the world-famous race this month.

In addition to the Fun Runs, the DRT will be holding a Family Fun Day which is free to attend, with activities arranged such as face painting, a bouncy castle and arts and crafts stalls, as well as a delicious barbecue, refreshment tent and cream teas on offer. The day’s events will commence at 10am until 4pm, and visitors are encouraged to come along and join in the fun, cheer on the runners and help raise money for a worthwhile local cause.

Any support will be gratefully received by the DRT, a charity that provides much-needed support for people with dyslexia. With specialist clinics, a dyslexia diagnosis service and ongoing, committed research into dyslexia and related conditions, the DRT aims to improve the lives of young people with learning difficulties, helping them to regain their confidence and reach their full potential, as John Stein, the charity’s founder says:

“Our aim is to actively help as many children and young people as possible, and to affect government policy so that changes will be made to improve reading instruction in schools. As an entirely self-funded charity, we are grateful of any help to continue our good work.

From all the DRT staff, we would like to express our thanks to Rick Stein and The Seafood Restaurant, Tim Hopkins of The Oxford Cellar, who is providing our beer and refreshment tent, Amanda Alder Dance Academy for their race warm-up plus fundraising through dance, Buildbase and local listings site HugoFox.com, without which none of this would be possible.”

Runners are encouraged to register online in advance, but places will still be available on the day at 9:45am from the registration tent.

The Trust is currently seeking volunteers to assist as race marshals or finishing line helpers, and would also encourage anyone wishing to hold a stall at the event to get in touch. Donations of new toys, books, and gift vouchers for the raffle/tombola, as well as any tents or gazebos, would likewise be hugely appreciated.
