Sunday was a memorable day for Rustington Otters U12FC, as they contested the U12 Challenge Cup Final against Worthing United Youth U12’s at Arundel Football Club.
After a nervous start from both teams, the Otters hit the crossbar in the first half and were unlucky not to go into the break a goal up. The second half continued with chances at both ends, before Worthing took the lead from a free kick. Just before the final whistle, the Otters goalkeeper pulled off a fantastic save to keep his team in the game before they equalised to make the final score 1-1.
After an extra 20 minutes of football, in which both teams were showing signs of fatigue, the game ended 1-1, and the final was to be decided by a penalty shootout. Both goalkeepers pulled off fine saves in the shootout and both teams missed from the spot before Worthing United eventually won the shootout by 5 goals to 4.
Elliott Crook, secretary of the Club told HugoFox News:
“It was such a dramatic end to a game, in which both teams played their hearts out, and showed a great sporting attitude throughout.”
He added, “The U12’s Otters team can now turn their attention to the league, and with one game to play, they currently top the division by 6 points, with the only other team who can challenge them for the title being Worthing Town Youth.”
