Ex-Alton Town player and past Reserve Team Manager (and generally splendid ATFC man), Glenn Murphy and Steve Carter are trekking to Everest Base Camp to raise money for The Stroke Association.
Following Glenn’s wife, Becci’s stroke a couple of years ago, Glenn decided that he wanted to do something to ‘give back’ and help others who have been affected. He says:
“Some of you will remember my wife, Becci, suffering a major stroke in November 2009, the day after her 39th birthday. Amazingly, her recovery was fast and almost 100%, thanks in no small measure to the stroke ward at Basingstoke Hospital.
“Thanks to ongoing research, she was given a ‘thrombolysis’ injection that dispersed the errant blood clot in her brain within a few hours of the stroke.
“Both myself and Steve Carter have decided to (attempt to !) trek to Everest as it is my 40th later this year, and I hope to raise money for The Stroke Association at the same time. My thanks to all those who have pledged their support so far.”
Everest base camp is no mean feat. Set in Nepal, some 5,364 metres (17,598 ft) above sea level, Glenn and Steve will have their work cut out for them as they conquer the first step of the world’s highest mountain.
The charity Glenn will be supporting works hard to reduce the number of strokes through a combination of research, education and support with their number of community services., The Stroke Association is a very worthwhile cause and all the team at HugoFox news hope that you’ll all dig deep to support Glenn on his trek later this year.
