A Whitchurch-based engineering company is beating the recession and promising to create more jobs following a £3.4 million investment in new equipment.

Local firm's expansion takes to the skies: Whitchurch-based precision engineering company RE Thompson counts several prestigious aviation names amongst their clientele

Precision engineering firm, R.E. Thompson and Company has been manufacturing since 1948 and while others have suffered over the last few years, the business’ turnover has actually doubled since 2008.

Owner, Michael Thompson, is determined that the company will be at the forefront of manufacturing. He’s travelled extensively overseas to research the latest manufacturing techniques and innovations in technology. Michael tells HugoFox news:

“I firmly believe that Britain can be competitive with low wage economies by continually investing in new technology and working smarter so that the process is more efficient, and cost-effective. We’re also continually focused on making the working environment better for all our employees”.

Many of the existing staff have already been with the company for years and in that time, have seen their careers develop through training and experience.

R.E. Thompson plans to double the size of the factory early this year, taking on twelve new members of staff and are aiming to continue to grow over the next three years, creating even more jobs. Michael Thompson is keen to see that expansion benefit local people:

“I’d rather bring skilled people from the area into the firm, than have a team that needs to commute long distances to work. It’s a fantastic feeling to be running a successful business which contributes to the local area. I’m lucky to work with a really supportive team of individuals who believe as passionately as I do, that there are huge advantages to building strong connections within our local communities.”
